A regional first innovative paediatric anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair with stem cell intervention has been carried out Dr Mohammad Ashfaq Konchwalla, a well-known consultant sports surgeon in Dubai.
Paediatric ACL reconstruction is a very demanding procedure which requires precision, accuracy and skill due to the incomplete fusion of the growth plates.
In this case, an innovative approach has been used in which the ACL repair has been done and stem cells were incorporated to achieve the best results.
ACL and meniscal tissue are 2 vital structures that provide knee stability. Injuries commonly occurs during contact sports. More than often these particular injuries require reconstruction due to their inability to regrow.
This advanced procedure has created a platform to allow for ACL repair rather than proceeding for ACL reconstruction which is often damaging to the growth plate.
10-year-old was playing football, he fell and sustained a knee injury. After visiting several orthopaedic surgeons, he was referred to me.
All the options of treatment were discussed with the family. The family agreed to proceed with the ACL repair surgery using stem cells. The procedure was successful and was performed within 60 minutes. The patient began mobilising on the same day but was required to follow up with physiotherapy in order to maximise recovery of the knee.
Dr. M A Konchwalla is a highly qualified Orthopaedic Sports surgeon in Dubai, who delivers high quality work which uses up to date and current research to provide the best for his patients.
