Anterior Cruciate Ligament-ACL is one of the 4 major ligaments located in the middle of the knee, femur, and tibia known as cruciate because it crosses with posterior cruciate ligament.
Provides rotational and anterior stability of the knee joint. Prevents translation of the femur over the tibia.
ACL is particularly vulnerable to injuries during contact sports, football, rugby, basketball and athletes.
Complete/Partial ACL tear/Avulsion injury of the ACL
Acute injury of the ACL can be managed with rest, ice, compression, elevation Options of treatment is conservatively with ACL rehabilitation/ACL reconstruction
If the patient would like to proceed for sport activities, he requires ACL reconstruction Partial tear of ACL can be repaired. Innovative approach is to use stem cell with ACL reconstruction to expedite faster recovery.
Hamstring graft bone Patella tendon graft Quadriceps graft Peroneal tendon graft and Allograft Outcome of ACL surgery is good and patient returns back to sports activity within 7 to 9 months.
